High-transparency PET plastic sheet material for food-grade packaging

 

PET is an environmentally friendly and high-performance transparent plastic capable of replacing PC, PMMA and PVC in various applications. It possesses high rigidity, hardness and good toughness. Owing to its high transparency and excellent barrier properties, PET has found widespread use in packaging for foodstuffs, alcoholic beverages, detergents, non-carbonated drinks and industrial products. Modified varieties of PET include APET and PETG. Compared to standard PET, APET and PETG exhibit enhanced low-temperature toughness (impact resistance and tear resistance) and improved heat resistance, alongside superior transparency in finished products.

  • The chemical formula for PET sheet is (C₁₀H₈O₄)_n. It is produced by ester exchange between dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol (or esterification between terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol) to yield terephthalic acid dihydroxyethyl ester, followed by polycondensation. It is a crystalline saturated polyester. Its natural colour is milky white or pale yellow, with a smooth, glossy surface. As a common plastic in daily life, it is generally categorised into types such as APET, GAG, PETG, and RPET.
  • PET sheet exhibits excellent mechanical properties, with impact strength three to five times that of other sheets, and superior resistance to folding.
  • Resistant to oils, fats, dilute acids, dilute alkalis, and most solvents.
  • PET sheet exhibits excellent resistance to both high and low temperatures. It can be used continuously within a temperature range of 120°C, and can withstand short-term exposure to temperatures as high as 150°C and as low as -70°C. Its mechanical properties remain largely unaffected under these extreme conditions.
  • Low permeability to gases and water vapour, with excellent resistance to gases, water, oils and odours.
  • High transparency, capable of blocking ultraviolet rays, with excellent gloss.
  • Non-toxic, odourless, and with excellent hygienic safety, it can be used directly for food packaging.
